When people talked about another company buying FCA, it was generally agreed that the only brand worth anything to another company was Jeep.
But GM already has a semi luxury, tough branded marquee. GMC should establish themselves as a rugged, off road Jeep/Land Rover competitor.
The Grand Cherokee Summit starts over $50k
Jeep offers its models raised slightly with some skid plates and extra body cladding and calls them “trailhawks”. Why isn’t GMC doing something similar? I know you can get the “all terrain” models but they need to be more different from the regular trim.
I bet if GMC went after Jeep, it’d be a home run. All the people that want a Jeep but worry about reliability would come running. It’s strange that no one has done this yet.
What do you think?

This is very true. Rift now GMC makes fancier Chevys, but so does Cadillac and Buick. Why not make GMC a more rugged brand instead

Alternative business plan: make current crossovers less reliable.... instant Jeep competitor!

rugged, off road Jeep/Land Rover competitor.
That’s what the Denali trim and the Escalade are for.

I work for a small local dealership group in their GM store (all brands) and next to us on the property is the FCA store. It’s insane how many people buy a wrangler just for the looks. We also get a ton of people that just want any Jeep SUV they can afford, which is bonkers because most of them suck.
GMC solely exsists for people that should drive a Chevrolet...but refuse to be seen in one. It would be cool to see GMC gain some independence, but I think hell will freeze over sooner.

Why not actually make the brand marketed as professional grade, professional grade huh? Good questions
The answer - shared platforms.
I expect an SUV based on the 31xx (Canyon/Colorado) at some point, they already have one in Australia. But D2UG (Terrain) and C1UG (Acadia) will never be serious off-roaders, they are just jacked up AWD car platforms.
So unless GM feels like committing the cash for the development of a bespoke platform for a GMC off-roader it wont happen. The sad thing is that I think you’re right. I think there is a market out there for a GMC Jeep Wrangler Competitor, but GM moves at a glacial pace so it will probably never happen.

I can’t understand why Jeep stays so popular making such bad cars. But yes, what you propose makes sense. I don’t think it would take much to shift GMC in that direction.

The Terrain and Acadia are based on car platforms but so are the current Renegade, Compass, Patriot and Cherokee platforms. If they made the GMCs just a bit beefier and make a Wrangler competitor I think they’d start eating into Jeep sales pretty quickly

True but those brands have things like a trailhawk trim as well to heighten their off road perception. If GMC at least offered that it would be enough to start differentiating itself from Chevy, Cadillac and Buick

CF sas made my point. 80% of jeeps volume is lifted fiats at this point. Jeep just has more offroad cachet propped by the wrangler.
